CSLB License Renewal Checklist —
Everything Due Before
Your Renewal Date
A lapsed CSLB license means you legally cannot work — and if you do, you're operating as an unlicensed contractor with serious legal exposure. Here's everything you need to renew on time, every time.
Don't wait until the last minute: CSLB processing times can take several weeks. Start your renewal 90 days before your expiration date to avoid any gap in licensure.
CSLB License Renewal Basics
- California contractor licenses expire every two years
- CSLB mails a renewal notice approximately 90 days before expiration
- You can renew online at cslb.ca.gov
- Renewal fees vary by license type — check the current fee schedule on the CSLB website
- As of 2025, California does not require continuing education hours for standard CSLB license renewals (this may change — verify at cslb.ca.gov before your renewal)
The Complete Renewal Checklist
Bond Requirements
- Confirm your contractor's bond is current and will not expire before your new license period ends
- Standard bond amount: $25,000 (as of 2023)
- If you employ others, you also need a Qualifying Individual bond if your qualifying individual is not a partner or officer
- Bond must be continuous — any gap in coverage can trigger license suspension
Workers' Compensation Insurance
- If you have employees, your workers' comp policy must be current
- File a current Certificate of Workers' Compensation with CSLB
- If you have NO employees, file a Workers' Compensation Exemption (DE 542) — CSLB requires this on file either way
- Workers' comp certificates expire — make sure yours covers the full renewal period
License Information — Verify Accuracy
- Business name is current and matches your DBA registration
- Business address is current
- All officers/partners listed are still active in the business
- Qualifying individual information is current
- License classification(s) are correct for the work you perform
Financial Obligations
- Pay renewal fee (check current fee at cslb.ca.gov)
- Any outstanding civil penalty payments are cleared
- Any outstanding CSLB judgments are satisfied
If You Have a Qualifying Individual Separate from Yourself
- Confirm the qualifying individual is still employed by your company
- Verify their personal license (if applicable) is current
- A qualifying individual who leaves your company can trigger immediate license suspension
After You Submit Your Renewal
Processing times vary. During peak periods CSLB processing can take 4-6 weeks. You can check your renewal status at cslb.ca.gov. Do not assume your license is renewed until you receive confirmation — operating on a lapsed license is illegal.
What Happens If Your License Lapses
- You cannot legally perform contractor work in California
- Any work performed while unlicensed is a misdemeanor
- Contracts signed while unlicensed may be unenforceable
- You cannot collect payment for work performed while unlicensed
- If you reinstate within 5 years you can generally renew without retaking the exam; after 5 years you may need to retest
Set Up Annual Compliance Reminders
The biggest risk with license renewal isn't the renewal itself — it's losing track of it. The most effective system: set calendar reminders 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days before your expiration date. Also track your bond and workers' comp renewal dates separately — those can lapse independently of your license renewal.
